Sony Is Ending Physical Discs for New PlayStation Games in 2028

Sony has officially confirmed that physical discs are being phased out for new PlayStation releases, with the change set to begin in January 2028.

In a post on the PlayStation Blog, the company announced that any new game released on PlayStation consoles after that point will be sold in digital formats only. Players will still be able to buy games through the PlayStation Store, as well as from participating retailers that offer digital codes.

The move does not affect games that are already available on disc, or titles scheduled to launch physically before the January 2028 cutoff. Those releases will continue to be sold in the usual disc format.

PlayStation Moves Further Away From Physical Games

Sony said the decision comes as more players choose digital purchases over boxed copies, reflecting a wider shift across gaming and entertainment.

The company described the transition as a natural step for PlayStation, saying digital media now makes up the preferred way many players access their games. By ending disc production for new releases, Sony says it can better focus its resources on modern ways of delivering games to its audience.

That means future PlayStation releases will still be sold through retailers, but instead of a disc inside the box, players should expect digital codes or other digital purchase options.

Existing Physical Games Are Not Going Away

For collectors and players who still prefer discs, the important detail is that this change is not retroactive.

Games released before January 2028, or games already planned to launch physically before then, will not be affected by the new policy. Physical copies of those titles can continue to be produced and sold.

However, once the cutoff arrives, new PlayStation games will no longer receive traditional disc releases.

Another Major Step Toward Digital-Only Gaming

The announcement marks one of Sony’s biggest moves away from physical media so far, and it comes at a time when the games industry is already leaning heavily into digital distribution.

Recent reports around GTA 6 also sparked concern among physical game fans, after claims that

the game’s boxed versions may not include an actual disc.

Some retailers have reportedly pushed back against selling “physical” editions that only contain a download code.

For PlayStation players, Sony’s latest announcement makes the direction clear: physical discs will remain part of the platform’s past and present, but not its future.
