Valve has officially announced the price and launch details for Steam Frame, its new standalone VR headset powered by SteamOS.

The headset starts at $1,059, with reservations opening on September 14. Instead of giving units to customers on a first-come, first-served basis, Valve is randomly selecting buyers from its initial reservation list.

The first purchase invitations are expected to be sent on September 18, with shipments beginning shortly afterward.

Steam Frame prices and specifications

The 256GB Steam Frame is priced at $1,059 in the United States, while the larger 1TB model costs $1,299.

Both versions feature a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, 16GB of RAM and support for microSD storage expansion. Each eye receives a 2160 x 2160 LCD display, with supported refresh rates ranging from 72Hz to 144Hz. Valve lists the maximum 144Hz option as experimental.

Steam Frame runs SteamOS 3 and can play supported VR titles directly on the headset. It can also run traditional flatscreen Steam games without requiring a separate PC

For more demanding titles, players can wirelessly stream games from their computer using the adapter included with the headset.

Other hardware features include inside-out tracking, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, integrated speakers and built-in microphones.

Steam Frame also comes with controllers offering full six degrees of freedom tracking alongside familiar gamepad-style inputs.

Valve is including Half-Life: Alyx with the headset.

How Steam Frame reservations work

Customers can join the reservation list for either Steam Frame model until September 17 at 10 AM PT.

Once the reservation period closes, Valve will randomize the list. Customers will then receive an email confirming whether they secured a reservation or were placed on the waitlist.

The first selected buyers are expected to receive purchase emails on September 18. Valve plans to begin shipping units shortly after those invitations are sent.

This system is similar to the reservation process used for the Steam Machine, where customers were assigned positions before receiving purchase opportunities.

Steam Frame accessories cost extra

Valve has also announced several optional accessories for the headset. This is unlike them but oh well.

The 45W Steam Hardware Power Supply costs $29, while the Ergonomic Accessories Kit is available for $59. An Accessory Replacement Kit will also be sold for $49.

Steam Frame does not come with its own dedicated power supply. However, Valve says customers can use a Steam Deck charger or another compatible USB-C charger capable of delivering at least 45W.
