Ex-Rockstar Dev Says GTA 6 Could Reuse Cut GTA 5 Content

Ex-Rockstar Dev Says GTA 6 Could Reuse Cut GTA 5 Content

Games get trimmed all the time. Features get built, tested, then quietly dropped when the deadline arrives. According to one former Rockstar developer, some of that leftover work from GTA 5 might turn up in Grand Theft Auto 6.

A busy few months, then silence again

Rockstar has had a lot to say lately. They confirmed the November 19 release date once more, and pre-orders finally cleared up the price question. The standard version runs $80 and the ultimate edition costs $100. There is no disc version at all this time.

Since then, things have gone quiet. Fans have been picking apart new screenshots and combing through a recent GTA Online update instead. A popular theory going around is that Rockstar is quietly testing GTA 6 ideas inside GTA Online first.

What the developer actually said

John Ricchio, who spent years at Rockstar, spoke with the Kiwi Talkz channel and agreed that unused GTA 5 material could realistically show up in the sequel.

He explained that it comes down to the technology. If the underlying tech between two games is close enough, old content can sometimes be dropped straight in to see how it behaves.

He also shared a concrete example. A Rockstar project that was never announced ended up being cancelled, and some of the missions built for it were later folded into GTA 4.

Plenty was left on the cutting room floor

Ricchio said a large amount of content was pulled from GTA 5 shortly before it shipped. That included mini-games that were, in his words, finished and ready to go.
