Why Rockstar Canceled Midnight Club 5

Rockstar once started work on Midnight Club 5 and even created an early version of London. However, the studio later canceled the project without saying much about it.
This is not unusual for Rockstar. Grand Theft Auto receives most of the studio’s attention, while many of its other games are left behind. Now, with GTA 6 only a few months away, a former Rockstar designer has explained why Midnight Club did not survive.
Why Rockstar Canceled Midnight Club 5
Kris Roberts, who worked on the Midnight Club series and later helped create the multiplayer mode for Red Dead Redemption, told Insider Gaming that development on a fifth game had already started before the project fell apart.
The team created several prototype cities, including an early version of London. However, development slowed down because of problems between Rockstar New York and the Midnight Club team in San Diego.

Some of the tension came from Midnight Club: Los Angeles missing several deadlines. However, Roberts believes the real issue was deeper than that.
Even though Midnight Club kept many players interested while competing with games like Need for Speed and Burnout, Rockstar New York reportedly had one simple response: “You’re not GTA.”
And what happened after?
After Midnight Club 5 was canceled, Rockstar broke up the team working on it. Some employees moved to the RAGE engine team or joined the development of Red Dead Redemption. Others lost their jobs.
According to Roberts, the message was clear. Rockstar was finished with Midnight Club, and its main focus from then on would be GTA.
Rockstar’s silence about Midnight Club also matches how the company handles GTA 6. The studio only shares what it wants fans to know.
This includes details such as Japan’s unusually short digital code period and hints from a former developer that canceled GTA 5 content could appear in the next game.
