Xbox shuts down GTA 6 PC streaming claims after exclusive deal report

Xbox has pushed back on claims that GTA 6 could be playable on PC through its cloud gaming service, following a report about an exclusive streaming deal.

The report raised hopes that PC players might get to join the game’s console launch without buying an Xbox Series X|S or PS5. However, Xbox has since said the game will not stream to PC, leaving questions about what its plans actually involve.

Xbox responds to GTA 6 streaming report

The discussion began after The Verge’s Tom Warren reported on October 6 that Microsoft was planning something unusual for GTA 6.

According to Warren, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma told employees that the company would do something “no other platform holder is doing” around the release. Sources linked that comment to an agreement giving Xbox exclusive streaming rights.

Warren suggested this could open the door for PC players to access GTA 6 through Xbox Cloud Gaming, even without owning a console.

Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball addressed the report a few hours later in a post on X.

“While the excitement for GTAVI and XBOX is great to see, it has also led to some misreporting,” Ball wrote. “We are looking forward to launching GTAVI on XBOX November 19, though the game will not be streaming exclusively or to PC.”

That statement rules out the PC streaming option described in the report. It also rejects the claim of streaming exclusivity, although it does not explain exactly how GTA 6 might be offered through the cloud.

Questions remain over GTA 6 on Xbox Cloud Gaming

Following Ball’s response, Warren stood by his reporting that GTA 6 would be available through Xbox Cloud Gaming, while acknowledging that the details were less straightforward than first suggested.

“It will be on Xbox Cloud Gaming,” he said, adding that “the Xbox cloud streaming rights deal for GTA 6 appears to be more complicated than I originally reported.”

In another post, Warren explained why he had raised the possibility of PC access.

“I reported it would be available on Xbox Cloud Gaming, and you’d normally assume that means PC and web clients can access it,” he wrote.

For now, Xbox’s statement means PC players should not expect cloud streaming to give them access when GTA 6 launches on November 19.

A separate PC release date also remains unannounced. GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 both reached PC after their console releases, but that history does not confirm when GTA 6 will make the move.
