Yoann: Hey, hello everyone! Today I’m with Overmaster, freelance caster and host! How would you introduce yourself?

Overmaster: Hello Yoann, let me start with the basics. My name is Robin ‘Overmaster’ Gauthier, and I’m a freelance VALORANT commentator who’s been specializing in Riot’s game since it first hit beta. Throughout the year, I work on a wide range of events, offering my services to tournament organizers and organizations. I handle everything related to casting, providing a comprehensive solution that includes production, direction, and of course, casting itself!

Yoann: That’s amazing! When and how did you get into esports?

Overmaster: I got into esports in a pretty funny way. My first experience with streaming was back in 2016 when a friend told me about Eclypsia, and I was instantly hooked—I wanted to create something similar.

Within a few weeks, I learned how to start my own web TV and what it takes to make a project like that happen. I recruited streamers to manage the project with me, and we had a full programming schedule running all week long. After that, I kept streaming solo until I got noticed by Millenium, who gave me the opportunity to work on their Overwatch web TV project. That’s how it all started, and how I began to really enjoy casting.

Yoann: That’s a pretty cool start indeed! What are you currently working on, on the Valorant scene?

Overmaster: Today, I’m looking to expand my reach as a caster, aiming to take another step forward by getting involved in major tournaments, which are my ultimate goal for the game! I work hard on everything I produce, always striving to impress the audience with each and every cast.

Yoann: Amazing! You have worked alongside major brands such as RedBull, and on big events like the Valorant Open Tour France, what can you tell us about these experiences?

Overmaster: Honestly, these are the most rewarding experiences for a caster. You work with a producer, a director, and the entire staff who make it clear that you’re not there to mess around. It’s a kind of pressure I really enjoy, and I’m able to channel that into pure energy in my casts. It’s really great to be around pros who support you, and it’s during these moments that the best opportunities often arise!

Yoann: That’s for sure! Let’s now move onto the Quick Questions part! I will ask you ten quick questions, and you’ll have to answer as fast as possible, ready?

Overmaster: Yeah!

Yoann: Phantom or Vandal?

Overmaster: Ugh, tough one! I have a soft spot for the Vandal, which I think I prefer (though I switch it up a lot depending on the situation).

Yoann: That makes sense! What's your favorite map?

Overmaster: Haven!

Yoann: Nice! What's your favorite agent?

Overmaster: Omen, my favorite smoker!

Yoann: What's your favorite skin collection?

Overmaster: The 2021 Champions Pack—the best Vandal and knife skins, hands down!

Yoann: What's your best memory working in esports?

Overmaster: The last Gamers Assembly is probably my number one esports highlight. With a final casted on stage and a surprise moment from the ultras of one of the teams—they showed up right behind me in the casting area to bring the hype. It was an amazing moment that I’ll never forget because of the connection with the community.

Yoann: How often do you play Valorant?

Overmaster: I watch way more than I play, though I go through phases. I tend to do the challenges and then put the game aside. During a split, I usually stick to official casts, which I draw a lot of inspiration from (especially the US cast). It helps me stay up-to-date on pro strats, which I can then recognize during my own casts. I find it much more valuable than playing.

Yoann: Can you name the nine teams that won an international event?

Overmaster: I think I have a few favorites with Acend, LOUD, Evil Geniuses for Champions; Gambit, FPX, Fnatic, Sentinels, OpTic Gaming, and Gen.G for Masters. Did I miss anyone?

Yoann: 9 out of 9, perfect! What's your favorite team?

Overmaster: Aside from the ones I’ve already mentioned, I have a lot of love for KC because of the hometown pride. Otherwise, I really love Fnatic’s story, which also holds a special place in my heart.

Yoann: I respect that! Who do you see winning Champions?

Overmaster: These Champions have been full of incredible twists and turns, and the pick’ems have never been more wrong! Even though I’d love to see EDG take the title (I had them second in my pick’ems for the group stage), I think Leviatan is ahead.

Yoann: Can you quote a voice line from your favorite agent?

Overmaster: “I will be their nightmare,” way too spot-on for what this agent can do!

Yoann: That’s right, haha! Let’s go back to the standard questions now, What are your hobbies or passions aside from gaming?

Overmaster: I’m a big movie buff… especially horror! I’m also a huge fan of the Lord of the Rings universe, and I’d love to visit New Zealand for that very reason. Seeing the film locations would be amazing. I spend a lot of my free time on development, and I love creating things. That and… eating well (it’s important after all)!

Yoann: 100%! What would you change to Valorant if you were a developer? (Agent/gun balance, map changes...)

Overmaster: Definitely, a replay mode! I think it’s the most requested feature by players and something Riot is already focusing on (we all remember that video showing a very rough replay mode).

Yoann: What are your short and long term ambitions?

Overmaster: In the short term, I’d like to cast the upcoming console events on VALORANT, which is a scene I plan to get into to diversify from PC, and maybe even get into top-level events. My long-term goal, of course, is to cast a major global event.

Yoann: What would you say to someone aspiring to work in esports?

Overmaster: Well, I think it’s important to be patient and persistent. It’s an industry where luck plays a big role, and unfortunately, there aren’t enough spots yet. Developing other skills (if things don’t work out in your preferred field) is also a great way to increase your chances. In short, keep learning, be self-taught, and most importantly, see it as a long-term journey. Too many great stories don’t always reach their full potential.

Yoann: For sure! Is there anything else you would like to say?

Overmaster: I wanted to thank you for this interview. It’s always nice to look back on what we’ve accomplished, and it helps us move forward too. VALORANT is an amazing game that has given me opportunities I never imagined, and it’s truly a dream come true. I also consider myself very lucky, of course, and I stay humble—it’s important to me. So, don’t give up if you want to take that first step into the world of esports!

Yoann: The pleasure is mine, thank you so much for your time, and I wish you the best in the future!

Overmaster: Thank you!
