Epic Games Lays Off Over 1,000 Employees
Epic Games is cutting more than 1,000 jobs following a slowdown in engagement for Fortnite. CEO Tim Sweeney stated that the company has been “spending significantly more than we’re making,” forcing the layoffs to maintain financial stability.
Sweeney noted that the layoffs are part of a wider $500 million cost-reduction plan covering contracting, marketing, and unfilled positions.
“Today we’re laying off over 1000 Epic employees. I’m sorry we’re here again,” Sweeney wrote in a message to staff."
Reasons Behind the Cuts
The decision is attributed to both internal and industry-wide pressures. Sweeney highlighted slower growth in the games market, weaker consumer spending, and lower console sales compared to previous generations.
Internally, Fortnite’s engagement decline has been a significant factor. While the game remains highly successful globally, Epic has struggled to consistently deliver the “Fortnite magic” each season.
The company is also investing in mobile optimization and long-term projects such as Unreal Engine development.
Layoffs Not Related to AI
Sweeney confirmed that the layoffs are not connected to artificial intelligence initiatives. He emphasized that productivity improvements through AI would help retain and empower developers.
Severance Packages and Future Plans
Affected employees will receive severance packages including:
- At least four months of base pay
- Extended healthcare coverage
- Accelerated stock vesting through January 2027
In the United States, healthcare coverage continues for six months, and equity exercise options are extended for up to two years.
Looking ahead, Epic plans to focus on strengthening Fortnite through seasonal content, gameplay updates, and live events, while continuing development on the next generation of Unreal Engine and other tools.
Industry Context
The announcement follows recent increases in Fortnite’s V-Bucks prices, which Epic described as necessary to help fund operations.
