Gaming is no longer just something students do in their free time. In some schools, it is becoming part of what they learn.

In the Philippines, a Grade 10 curriculum is using video games as a teaching tool. This reflects a broader trend where educators are finding new ways to connect with students through things they already enjoy.

Games have been used before to support learning. Titles like Assassin’s Creed have helped explain history, while others have been used to improve language and critical thinking. Now, one program is going further by focusing on competitive gaming.

Valorant Is Being Studied

A lesson from the Department of Education’s Matatag Curriculum shows that students are studying Valorant as part of digital wellness.

Students are expected to understand how it works. They learn about objectives, mechanics, and how different agent roles affect team strategy. It turns a popular shooter into something closer to a case study.

It doesn't stop there

You would think it stops at gameplay, but not really. Students work on skills that apply outside gaming as well.

They learn how to communicate with a team, plan strategies, and manage their time. They are also expected to show fairness and respect during matches.

Some parts of the lesson even involve organizing esports events, which introduces them to the structure behind competitive gaming.

Not Limited to One Game

Valorant is just one option in the curriculum. Schools can choose other titles depending on what fits their approach.

The list includes League of Legends, Dota, Hearthstone, StarCraft II, Rocket League, Minecraft, FIFA, PUBG, and Tekken.

The idea is to use familiar games to make lessons more engaging while still teaching useful concepts.

In other words, you may see your kids learning about these games in the future.
