VCT Pacific has entered full offseason rostermania, and one of the region's heavyweight franchises is initiating a comprehensive reset. South Korean organization T1 has confirmed sweeping departures across its active Valorant division, parting ways with marquee stars Kim "Meteor" Tae-oh and Byeon "Munchkin" Sang-beom, substitute player Kang "DH" Dong-ho, head coach Kim "KDG" Dong-gun, and assistant coach Lee "CheongGak" Il-ho.

The departures mark a major strategic pivot for an organization that reached global heights in recent campaigns, documented in our historical retrospective on all VCT tournament winners in history. While T1 hoisted the trophy at Masters Bangkok in 2025 behind an MVP performance from Meteor, the team faced inconsistent domestic results throughout 2026, prompting management to clear out contracts and rebuild from the ground up.

Here is the strategic breakdown of T1's roster moves, how the team's internal roles shifted throughout the year, and what the remaining core looks like heading into 2027.

Meteor and Munchkin: The End of a Dynamic Partnership

The departure of Meteor represents the end of an era for T1's modern lineup. After claiming international glory with Gen.G during their 2024 campaign, Meteor transferred to T1 and paid immediate dividends, serving as the offensive spearhead during their championship run at Masters Bangkok. While T1 granted him permission to explore free agency options late in the season, his contract has now officially expired without a renewal.

Ahead of the 2026 season, T1 attempted to double down on that championship pedigree by acquiring his former Gen.G teammate Munchkin. The reunion arrived with immense expectations, but role balance proved difficult to sustain:

  • Role Fluidity and Calling Conflicts: Munchkin initially took the reins as the primary Controller and in-game leader (IGL). However, as tactical friction mounted during early stages, T1 restructured its shotcalling hierarchy.

  • The Return of stax: Mid-season adjustments saw veteran IGL Kim "stax" Gu-taek take back full primary shotcalling duties, moving Munchkin into a secondary caller role on flexible utility.

  • The DH Rotation: Substitute player Kang "DH" Dong-ho was elevated from T1 Academy to test alternative lineups on Controller and Sentinel duties like Cypher, but was benched after a four-game sample size to re-insert stax into the primary five.

With both Meteor and Munchkin entering the open market, two of the Pacific region's most decorated hybrid players become immediate top targets for rival VCT franchises seeking proven international firepower.

Coaching Turmoil: Searching for a Third Leader in Three Years

The shakeup extends directly behind the bench. Head coach KDG exits after a single season, having originally transitioned to the main roster from T1 Academy following previous coaching stints in Overwatch and with Gwangju Shadow.

Assistant coach CheongGak also departs, concluding his second tour of duty with the organization following an earlier coaching period that included a brief tenure with Wolves Esports.

For T1, securing an experienced tactical head coach represents the most critical puzzle piece of the winter. Despite their international success at Masters Bangkok, T1 has consistently struggled to capture an elusive domestic VCT Pacific league championship. Finding a coaching voice capable of establishing tactical discipline across a fresh roster remains priority number one.

The Remaining Core: Building Around stax, BuZz, and iZu

Despite losing five key personnel, T1 does not enter the offseason in a desperate scramble. The team retains an elite, highly flexible three-man core:

  • Kim "stax" Gu-taek (IGL / Initiator / Controller): One of the most respected leaders in Asian tactical shooter history, capable of anchoring defensive rounds or orchestrating complex site takes.

  • Yu "BuZz" Byeong-cheol (Duelist): A consistent entry fragger who reliably generates opening picks without demanding heavy utility sacrifices from teammates.

  • Ham "iZu" Woo-ju (Flex): A versatile operator capable of plugging into any role or off-meta pick required by regional drafting shifts.

Current T1 Valorant Lineup

  • Kim "stax" Gu-taek (김구택)

  • Yu "BuZz" Byeong-cheol (유병철)

  • Ham "iZu" Woo-ju (함우주)

  • Shin "Norman" Jun-ho (Manager)

With stax able to flex between Controller and Initiator, BuZz locked into the primary Duelist slot, and iZu bridging gaps across the agent pool, T1 enters free agency with total roster flexibility. Management faces virtually zero positional restrictions, leaving the door wide open to sign two impact free agents or promote emerging mechanical talent from the Challengers circuit.
