YouTube Adds Longer Unskippable Ads

Viewers watching YouTube on televisions may soon see longer ads, after Google confirmed that 30-second unskippable ads are being introduced to the platform’s TV app.
The change means some ads that previously allowed viewers to skip after a few seconds will now run for the full 30 seconds with no option to skip. The only way to avoid them completely is by subscribing to YouTube Premium.
Google says the update is focused specifically on YouTube’s television experience, where viewing habits are closer to traditional TV watching.
Designed for Living-Room Viewing
According to Google, the longer ads are meant to help advertisers reach audiences who are watching content on a big screen in a relaxed environment.
The company explained that its ad system uses AI to choose between different ad formats depending on the situation.
These include six-second bumper ads, 15-second standard ads, and the new 30-second unskippable ads designed for connected TV devices.
TV Is Becoming a Major Platform
The change comes as YouTube continues to grow rapidly on televisions. In recent years, more viewers have started opening the YouTube app on smart TVs and streaming devices instead of watching on phones or computers.
Financial research firm MoffettNathanson even described YouTube as the “new king of all media,” estimating the platform generated around $62 billion in revenue during 2025.
That figure reportedly allowed it to surpass The Walt Disney Company in total media revenue.
