GTA 6 NPCs React When You Carry Guns

Rockstar Games has revealed that carrying a visible weapon in GTA 6 could be enough to make nearby civilians panic, even if the player never aims or fires it.
The change represents a major upgrade from Grand Theft Auto 5, where pedestrians generally ignored drawn weapons until they were directly threatened. In GTA 6, simply walking through a public area with a firearm in your hands may attract unwanted attention.
GTA 6 NPCs will recognize visible threats
Rockstar co-studio head Rob Nelson discussed the new system during an interview with content creator TGG.
According to Nelson, GTA 5’s approach no longer meets the level of realism Rockstar wants to achieve. Players in that game could suddenly pull out a shotgun near pedestrians without receiving much of a response unless they pointed it at someone.
That behavior has been redesigned for GTA 6. Civilians will now recognize that a person openly holding a gun could be dangerous and react before the situation escalates.
NPCs may become uncomfortable, move away from the player or attempt to leave the area. This should make carrying a weapon openly feel like a deliberate decision rather than something players can do without consequences.
How NPCs react depends on the weapon
The system will also consider how the player is carrying the firearm.
Having a rifle or another long gun secured on the character’s back should not immediately cause panic. Holding that same weapon in your hands, however, will make nearby people treat you as a possible threat.
This distinction suggests GTA 6 NPCs will judge situations with more context than pedestrians in previous games. They will not necessarily react to every visible weapon in the same way, but they will pay attention to behavior that appears threatening.
It could also force players to think carefully before preparing for a robbery or confrontation in a crowded location. Drawing a gun too early may alert civilians before the player is ready to act.
GTA 6 changes how players carry weapons
Rockstar is also moving away from GTA 5’s ability to store a huge collection of firearms on the character at all times.
Players will reportedly be able to keep two pistols concealed. Larger weapons will require additional storage, creating a system similar to Red Dead Redemption 2.
That could mean using a vehicle to transport rifles, shotguns and other heavy equipment. Players may need to choose their loadout before starting a mission instead of instantly accessing every weapon they own.
Together, the new carrying restrictions and improved NPC awareness should make weapons feel more physical and noticeable within the world. Pulling out a gun will no longer be a harmless action that everyone ignores.
