While eliminating the Ender Dragon is considered the milestone that finishes survival progression, veteran players recognize that the Wither is the most destructive boss in Minecraft. With devastating projectile explosions, the lethal Wither status effect, and high flight mobility, fighting the boss unprepared will level entire biomes and erase your best gear.

Whether you have already completed our core guide on how to beat Minecraft or are stockpiling resources for beacon towers, here is the verified survival strategy to conquer the Wither safely.

Required Gear and Potion Preparations

Attempting the Wither in open terrain with iron gear is a guaranteed death loop. Assemble this baseline loadout before placing the final skull:

1. Armor and Weapons

  • Full Netherite or Diamond Armor: Every piece enchanted with Protection IV and Unbreaking III.

  • Netherite Sword with Smite V: Because the Wither is classified as an undead mob, Smite V deals significantly higher damage than Sharpness V, cutting the melee phase in half.

  • Bow or Crossbow: Enchanted with Power V and Infinity (or high-velocity Piercing on crossbows) for the initial flight phase.

2. Vital Consumables

  • Milk Buckets (3 to 4): Instantly clears the Wither status debuff if your health bar begins turning black.

  • Potions of Healing II and Regeneration II: Fast health restoration to survive sudden splash explosions.

  • Potions of Strength II: Essential for phase two burst damage.

  • Enchanted Golden Apples: Grants absorption hearts and resistance against point-blank skull bursts.

Spawning Mechanics: Constructing the Frame

To build the Wither totem, you need 4 blocks of Soul Sand (or Soul Soil) and 3 Wither Skeleton Skulls (farmed from Nether Fortresses):

  1. Place one block of Soul Sand on the ground.

  2. Place a second block directly on top of it.

  3. Place one block on the left and one block on the right of the upper piece to create a "T" shape.

  4. Place the three Wither Skeleton Skulls along the top row of the Soul Sand blocks.

Critical Rule: Always place the center skull last. Once placed, back away immediately. The Wither spawns invulnerable for roughly ten seconds while charging its health pool before releasing an enormous initial explosion that instantly kills nearby players.

Combat Strategy: Java Edition vs. Bedrock Edition

The Wither fight operates under drastically different difficulty parameters depending on which version of the game you play:

Java Edition Combat Flow

  • Phase 1 (100% to 50% HP): The Wither flies above ground, firing black guided skulls and blue shield-breaking skulls. Stay at a distance and fire fully charged bow shots until its health drops to half.

  • Phase 2 (Below 50% HP): The Wither gains Wither Armor, rendering it completely immune to all arrows and trident throws. Drink your Potion of Strength II, close the distance, and strike with your Smite V sword while strafing around its attacks.

Bedrock Edition Warnings

On Bedrock Edition, the Wither is vastly more dangerous. It possesses 600 HP (double the Java pool), spawns hostile Wither Skeletons at half health, and executes a high-speed dash attack that demolishes terrain blocks. Never fight the Bedrock Wither near your main base or storage chests.

The Tunnel Method: Safest Solo Survival Strategy

If you want to defeat the boss without using bedrock-glitching exploits:

  1. Dig down to Y-level -50 deep in the stone layers of the Overworld.

  2. Mine out a straight, one-block-wide tunnel that extends 100 blocks forward.

  3. Construct the Wither at the far end of the hallway.

  4. As the Wither spawns and explodes, step backward down your narrow tunnel.

  5. Because the Wither is forced into the cramped hallway, its skull projectiles will bore out stone blocks directly in front of it.

  6. Continuously backpedal down the strip-mine while firing arrows in phase one, and finish it with melee strikes through the narrow aperture in phase two.

Collect the dropped Nether Star, which is completely immune to explosions, and craft your first full Beacon.
