Minecraft Java Just Raised Its System Requirements for the First Time in 17 Years

Minecraft Java Edition launched back in 2009, and for most of its life, the hardware needed to run it barely changed.

That's no longer true. Mojang has just raised both the minimum and recommended system requirements for Java Edition, the first update of its kind in roughly 17 years.

So can you play it still?

This change lands in the middle of an already eventful stretch for Minecraft. The game recently moved away from its traditional update model in favor of "Game Drops," Bedrock Edition got a major visual overhaul (with a Java version reportedly planned for later), and players only just gained the ability to sit down.

Against that backdrop, a refreshed spec sheet feels like one more sign that Java Edition is still being actively developed rather than left alone.

Mojang's reasoning is fairly straightforward: the game needs more headroom to keep expanding. New features and behind-the-scenes technical work both add strain, and requirements set nearly two decades ago were never built to handle that load.

If your PC or laptop is getting up there in age, it's worth checking whether it still clears the bar before loading up your world.

GPUNVIDIA GTX 950, AMD Radeon RX 460, or Intel Arc A310 (discrete); Intel i5-6400 integrated graphics; or Apple M1NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060, AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT, Intel Arc A580, or Apple M2 Pro

What do these specs really mean?

Mojang has also clarified what these numbers mean in practice. The minimum spec is built

around hitting 1080p at 30 frames per second on the "Fast" graphics preset, while the recommended spec targets a smoother 1080p at 60 frames per second on "Fancy" settings.

Your actual results may land a bit above or below those marks depending on how much you value smoothness versus visual detail.

For machines that fall short of the minimum, Mojang says the game may still launch, but the experience likely won't hold up. Expect the usual symptoms of a struggling system: dropped frames, visual glitches, long loading times, and performance that falls short of what players expect.

Even so, there's no reason to worry too much. Compared to most modern AAA titles, Java Edition's new requirements are still on the light side, and the majority of players should have no trouble running the game smoothly at 1080p.
