Electric-type Pokémon have historically defined offensive momentum across competitive battling. Fast sweepers and defensive pivots often rely on Electric typing because of its clean defensive profile. However, exploiting an electric type weakness remains straightforward once you understand its singular defensive vulnerability and unique immunity rules.

Below is the verified breakdown of Electric-type weaknesses, resistances, and the most effective counters to use in competitive play.

What Is Electric Type Weak To?

In standard Pokémon battles, pure Electric types have exactly one weakness: Ground.

  • Ground-Type Attacks: Offensive Ground moves (such as Earthquake, Earth Power, and Scorching Sands) deal 2x super effective damage against pure Electric types.

  • Complete Defensive Immunity: In the main series games, Ground-type Pokémon are completely immune to Electric-type attacks. Electric moves deal 0x damage to Ground Pokémon, rendering high-power staples like Thunderbolt and Volt Switch completely useless.

  • Pokémon GO Mechanics: Because true immunities do not exist in Pokémon GO, Ground-type Pokémon take triple-resisted damage (0.391x) from Electric attacks, granting them immense survivability in Gyms, Raids, and the GO Battle League.

Electric Type Resistances and Strengths

To counter Electric types effectively, avoid fielding Pokémon that trigger their defensive advantages:

  • Attacks Electric Resists (Takes 0.5x Damage):

    • Electric

    • Flying

    • Steel

  • Types Vulnerable to Electric Attacks (Deals 2x Damage):

    • Water

    • Flying

  • Status Immunity: Electric-type Pokémon cannot be inflicted with the Paralysis status condition, regardless of whether it originates from Thunder Wave, Stun Spore, or ability triggers like Static.

Top Counters Against Electric-Type Pokémon

When facing dominant Electric threats like Miraidon, Zapdos, or Iron Hands, these Ground-type specialists provide the strongest answers:

  1. Garchomp (Dragon / Ground): The Dragon typing removes any potential Grass or Water coverage threats, while high base Attack and Speed allow Garchomp to outpace and eliminate Electric targets with Earthquake.

  2. Landorus-Therian (Ground / Flying): A VGC staple that completely blocks Electric attacks while threatening immediate offensive pressure and lowering opponent Attack through Intimidate.

  3. Excadrill (Ground / Steel): Exceptional defensive typing that resists nine distinct elements while shutting down Electric offensive moves completely.

  4. Clodsire and Gastrodon: Bulky defensive walls equipped with Ground typing and abilities like Water Absorb or Storm Drain, eliminating potential coverage surprises.

Watch Out for Dual Typing and Levitate

While pure Electric Pokémon carry only one weakness, dual typing shifts the matchup math significantly:

  • The Levitate Factor: Pokémon like Rotom or Eelektross possess the Levitate ability, which negates their Ground weakness entirely and leaves them with zero natural elemental weaknesses.

  • Flying / Electric (Zapdos, Thundurus): Flying typing completely negates the Ground weakness, transforming their vulnerabilities into Ice and Rock.

  • Water / Electric (Rotom-Wash, Lanturn): Water typing eliminates Ground vulnerabilities when paired with appropriate abilities, leaving Grass as a primary target.
