Riot Games has implemented a significant backend change across all platforms with the latest VALORANT patch, transitioning the game engine from Unreal Engine 4.27 to Unreal Engine 5.3.

According to the official announcement, this shift does not directly impact moment-to-moment gameplay for most users, aside from minor performance enhancements.

However, it represents a substantial advancement for the development team, providing improved tools and flexibility for future updates and optimizations.

Major Engine Upgrade with Unreal Engine 5.3 Might Have Bugs

While the download size for this patch is notably larger due to the engine overhaul, one immediate benefit is a significantly reduced disk footprint, cutting the total installation size by approximately 50%. Riot has confirmed that subsequent patch download sizes will return to normal levels.

Despite extensive testing, early feedback from some community members has highlighted technical issues following the update. Notably, a streamer reported persistent microstuttering during aiming engagements, severely affecting their gameplay experience.

In response, Riot developer Marcus Reid (@RiotNu) acknowledged the concerns on social media, stating, “We’ve done a ton of diligence to make sure 11.02 is rock solid, but if you find any juicy bugs, please send them my way.”

As with any major engine transition, a brief adjustment period is expected while developers address unforeseen technical challenges.
