VALORANT reveals major VCT 2027 format changes

VALORANT Esports is heading into a major shake-up in 2027, with Riot Games moving the VCT away from traditional league play and toward a tournament-focused format where every match carries more weight.
The new structure is built around a simple idea: every stage matters. Regular season play will be replaced by Cups, Open Qualifiers will give more teams a route into the system, and partner teams will still have an important role without being guaranteed a free path through the entire season.
Riot has now shared more details on how VCT 2027 will work, including team progression, qualification routes, financial support, and how open teams can climb into the biggest events of the year.
How VCT 2027 begins
In VCT Americas, Pacific, and EMEA, Kickoff events will feature 12 teams in total. That field will include eight partner teams and four teams from Open Qualifiers.
The goal is to give open teams more than a token opportunity. By reserving four slots for teams coming through qualifiers, Riot is creating a larger path for non-partner teams while still keeping partner organizations heavily involved in the ecosystem.
At Kickoff, the top three teams from each territory will qualify for Masters. After that, teams will have to keep earning their spots through performance.
Partner teams will begin with direct entry into Kickoff, but they will not automatically qualify for every Cup. Once the season is underway, results will decide where teams go next.
Teams that finish outside the top positions at a Cup or Masters will drop into Open Playoffs, where they must battle back into the main competition. Teams with no previous results, or those that perform poorly in earlier Opens, will need to restart from the next Open Qualifiers.
VCT CN and Pacific will have different pathways
VCT CN will use a slightly different format. Partner teams and visitor teams will receive direct entry into Kickoff and the first two Cups.
Kickoff in China will include 12 teams, made up of eight partner teams, two visitor teams, and two teams from Open Qualifiers. The visitor team system will continue as a separate path into the ecosystem, supported by promotion and relegation.

VCT Pacific will also include a Last Chance Qualifier. This LCQ will allow top teams from South Asia and Oceania to fight for spots in Kickoff and Cups, giving the wider Pacific region another competitive route into the VCT structure.
Open teams can build momentum through roster continuity
Open teams and creator-led teams will be able to compete, qualify, and work toward larger events like any other team.
The key requirement is roster continuity. A team must keep at least three of its five players to retain its points and progress.
This means open teams can build momentum across the season instead of starting from zero after every event, as long as the core lineup remains intact.
Riot adds major financial support for non-partner teams
One of the biggest changes coming in 2027 is fixed financial support for open teams that qualify into major stages of the VCT ecosystem.
Non-partner teams will receive set payments based on qualification:
- Qualifying for Kickoff or a Cup will award $100,000.
- Qualifying for Masters will award $200,000.
- Qualifying for Champions will award $400,000.
These payments are designed to give successful open teams more stability at the exact moments when support is most needed.

Open teams will also remain eligible for prize pool winnings and extra incentives. For example, a non-partner team that qualifies for the Game Changers Championship will receive an additional $100,000 incentive.
The system is intended to make strong performance financially meaningful, even for teams outside the partnership model.
Community competitions are also changing
Riot is also updating its Community Competition Guidelines as part of the 2027 transition.
The updated rules are designed to make it easier for organizers around the world to host
VALORANT events, support local scenes, and create more competitive opportunities outside the top level of VCT.

This should help strengthen regional competition and give more teams a way to develop before reaching the international stage.
VCT 2027 is built to be more open
The 2027 VCT format is designed to make VALORANT Esports more open, more competitive, and more connected to local communities.
Partner teams will still be central to the ecosystem, but performance will matter more throughout the year.
Open teams will have more chances to qualify, regional scenes will gain stronger pathways, and Cups will help bring more live events to more cities.
