Interview with Twiggy, Valorant Commentator and Analyst
Yoann: Hey, hello everyone! Today I’m with Twiggy, he’s a Valorant caster and analyst!
How are you, and how would you introduce yourself?
Twiggy: I’m great, thank you! I’m Twiggy, and I’m a variety esports commentator, I do a bit of everything, and I also do some content creation!
Yoann: Awesome! When and how did you get into Casting, and why in esports?
Twiggy: It was around February 2021, and my friends were telling me I had the voice for commentary! Back in 2016, when I was playing CSGO, I remember jokingly imitating CSGO casters while I was playing. I might have picked up some casting skills doing that!
I started in esports because it’s more accessible, it’s my hobby, so it was a natural way to get into it.
Yoann: That’s interesting! Which other games have you worked on, other than Valorant?
Twiggy: Most recently, Trackmania, that was super fun to do! I have also cast Free Fire, Apex Legends, Rocket League, and I’m hoping to do some Counter-Strike soon!
I’ve always had the dream of commentating on Formula 1, but I don’t even know how you could transition from esports to F1, it’s a long road!
Yoann: Oh that’s great! Is it easy for you to switch between analyst, play-by-play, and color casting?
Twiggy: Play-by-play is the most natural and easy for me, I like being dynamic and energetic on broadcast, I think it’s my strongest trait. Desk analysis would be second best for me, it’s relatively easy and similar to play-by-play.
I wouldn’t say I’m a confident color caster, it’s very different, you have to analyze stuff on the fly, and add depth to the broadcast, I think so many people are really good at it, and I’m not that kind of person.
Yoann: Who is your caster duo, how did you guys meet?
Twiggy: Ne0Kai! We’ve been working at Polaris for a while, the first time we met was in York for the 2022 Split 1 Finals. We didn’t work as a pair at the time, I was working with Moxi and Neo was with ExWarrior. It was only a matter of time before we ended up casting together.
The chemistry we have as friends translates well to the broadcast.
Yoann: Do you have a common preparation routine before matches?
Twiggy: It sounds a little weird, but when I do play-by-play, I usually don’t prepare notes or anything like that, I memorize things and listen to loud music right until the broadcast to hype myself up! The energy and the way you present the gameplay are way more important than in-depth stats that are going to go straight over everybody’s heads when you’re in a heated moment.
Yoann: Yeah, I agree! Which type of tournaments will you be working on next season?
Twiggy: I really hope I’ll be a part of VCT Game Changers next year, that would be brilliant! I have a lot of friends and I’m very active, I know a lot about that scene.
I also hope I’ll get the opportunity to work in the Challengers scene again, and I’d love to be part of the VCT EMEA at one point, but the competition to be on the broadcast is insanely difficult, it would be a lovely surprise!
Yoann: For sure! Let’s now move on to the quick questions part, I will ask you ten quick questions, and you’ll have to answer as fast as possible, ready?
Twiggy: Yeah!
Yoann: Phantom or Vandal?
Twiggy: Vandal!
Yoann: What's your favorite map?
Twiggy: Split!
Yoann: What's your favorite agent?
Twiggy: Chamber!
Yoann: What's your favorite skin collection?
Twiggy: Sentinel of light!
Yoann: What is your favorite team to cast in Valorant?
Twiggy: Most recently, it was Apeks, I really love a flashy dynamic team with unique strats. Currently, I have my eyes on Team Liquid!
Yoann: Who are your favorite players of all time?
Twiggy: On CSGO, it would be S1mple, but on Valorant, probably Boaster!
Yoann: Can you name the eight teams that won an international event?
Twiggy: I believe there are actually 9 when you include Game Changers!
In order, Sentinels, Gambit, Acend, Optic, FPX, Loud, G2 in Game Changers, and then, Fnatic and EG!
Yoann: Great job! How often do you play Valorant?
Twiggy: Every couple of days, I play in stacks with friends. I like to play quite a lot, it’s enjoyable!
Yoann: What kind of music do you listen to get in the zone?
Twiggy: A bit of EDM, maybe some dubstep, or epic music like the League of Legends songs!
Yoann: Can you quote a voice line from your favorite agent, Chamber?
Twiggy: The line I really like is “That is good, but there is more to do. On est pas sorti de l’auberge”! I really love this voice line haha!
Yoann: Haha amazing! What are your hobbies or passions aside from gaming?
Twiggy: I’m a big sports person in general, I like playing volleyball, and football, I like running, stuff like that!
Yoann: That’s great! What would you change to Valorant if you were a developer?
Twiggy: I would probably alienate the entire community, and everybody would hate me, but I think I’d revert the changes for Breeze, I don’t like the new version.
Yoann: Oh, that’s interesting. Would you bring back the old Chamber?
Twiggy: I like the way he is now! You now get a bit of Jett and a bit of Chamber in the current meta, I think he’s still useful!
Yoann: What would be your dream Valorant roster?
Twiggy: I would love to see a mixed team, with male and female players. It would probably be Derke, Enzo, Ange1, meL, and Mimi!
Yoann: Three IGLs!
Twiggy: Yeah, maximum brain power, and super strats!
Yoann: Haha amazing! What advice would you give to someone aspiring to become a commentator in esports?
Twiggy: I think you have to find your niche, you have to be a unique personality, you can’t just copy somebody else. One of the first pieces of advice I got was from Uber, and he said “Don’t just say what’s coming up on the killfeed”, you need your own thing, your own energy.
There’s so much competition and not as many events as there were 5 years ago.
Create content, make friends, and highlight what makes you unique!
Yoann: Awesome! What are your short and long-term ambitions?
Twiggy: Short term, I’d love to work an S-tier gig in Valorant, a tournament would be so cool, and seeing all the fans from different countries would be amazing.
Long term, I just want stability, to be picked up for a full year, and to be able to fully focus on that. I’m very ambitious and driven, and I need somewhere to funnel all this energy!
Yoann: That’s for sure! Is there anything else you would like to say?
Twiggy: Thanks for chatting with me! And if you want to find out more about me, @TwiggyCasts on Twitter, and my website https://iamtwiggy.uk/ , so if you want to hire me, go for it!
