Riot Games Reportedly Prevents Evil Geniuses VALORANT Spot Sale to FlyQuest
In a surprising turn of events, Riot Games has reportedly intervened to block the sale of Evil Geniuses' VALORANT spot to FlyQuest. This decision comes amidst a chaotic offseason for the VALORANT Championship Tour (VCT) Americas.
According to a report by Alejandro “Anonimotum” Gomis, Evil Geniuses, the reigning VALORANT world champions, were in talks to transfer their partnership slot in the VCT Americas to FlyQuest, a member of the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS). However, Riot Games stepped in and halted the agreement. This move marks FlyQuest's second unsuccessful attempt to secure a spot in the VCT Americas, following their earlier loss in acquiring The Guard’s roster to G2 Esports.
Evil Geniuses had been looking to exit esports entirely after being bought out of the LCS for around $6 million. Negotiations with FlyQuest spanned several months, involving the transfer of both the VALORANT spot and the entire championship roster. Both parties were hopeful for Riot's approval, especially since Riot had previously allowed players from The Guard, who exited esports, to sign with new organizations.
Details about the EG players' contracts during this period also surfaced. Players were reportedly asked to accept a significant salary cut, with the risk of full contractual termination and minimal severance pay for those who declined.
