The Future For Hytale

The roadmap is expected to change as the game develops and as player feedback comes in. It has already shifted from what it was just a few weeks ago. The plan is to stay flexible and avoid making promises that can’t be kept.
The focus right now is on building a great game before worrying about making a perfect engine. Releasing early comes with risks, and first impressions are tough to fix, but the team is taking that risk. The community will play a huge role by reporting bugs, giving feedback, and creating content.
No risk, no Hytale.

The first big goals include polishing the living world, modding tools, core systems, and the sandbox experience. Once things feel solid, attention will shift heavily toward Adventure Mode and Minigames.
The Current State of the Game
Here’s a clear look at what the team is working with. Two different engines were in development:
Legacy Engine (C#/Java, PC-only):
This is the engine shown in trailers and old blog posts. It was already far along years ago.
Cross-platform Engine (C++):
This version has been in development for about three years but is far behind in gameplay and needs major work. Early access with it would be at least two years away.
The Cross-platform Engine is being dropped. Development is returning to the Legacy Engine because it’s playable now and lets the team focus on building the actual game.
Plans to make it cross-platform will come later, with no rush.
Inside the current game, there are over 100 NPCs and thousands of items and blocks, but many still need proper configuration. Expect bugs, unbalanced loot, and rough edges. This is real early access, so reporting issues is important.

Official minigames won’t be ready at the start of early access. The team will work on them once the main game is stable. The community will already be able to create custom servers, modes, and minigames, and the official team will share assets later on.
The team is intentionally small. Growing too fast causes problems, but staying small means slower balancing. The upside is quick decision-making and less bureaucracy.
Progress toward early access has been strong in recent days, and development will speed up as the team fully takes over the project. Patch notes with full details will be released soon.
Modding: Critical to the Game’s Future
Modding has always been central to the vision, and it’s key to long-term success. Early access will launch with as many tools and as much access as legally possible.
What players can expect:
-
Almost everything in the game can be modded
-
Non-programmers can create impressive content
-
Simple guides or videos will be enough to get started
-
Server source code access will come a few months after launch
-
Dedicated server support
-
Data-driven content setup
-
Efforts toward keeping things backward compatible
-
Full freedom to make custom servers, maps, and adventures
More details will come in a future post.
Modding is not a bonus feature. It’s the backbone of the game’s lifespan.
