You Will Need ID Verification To Play GTA 6

Australian players may be required to prove they are adults before accessing Grand Theft Auto VI, potentially using a driver’s licence or another form of official identification.
Rockstar Games’ highly anticipated title is currently scheduled for release on November 19, 2026. The game will return players to Vice City and introduce the wider fictional state of Leonida, featuring new locations, activities, characters, and gameplay systems.
However, Australia’s expanding online safety regulations could make accessing the game more complicated for local players.
Australian Laws Could Require GTA 6 Age Checks
According to a report from News.com.au, online safety rules introduced in Australia may require gaming platforms and publishers to verify the ages of users attempting to access mature content.
GTA 6 is expected to receive an R18+ classification in Australia because of its violent themes, criminal activity, strong language, and other adult content.
As a result, Rockstar Games could be required to confirm that Australian players are at least 18 years old. Verification methods could include submitting a government-issued ID, such as a driver’s licence.
Rockstar Could Face Major Penalties
Companies that fail to comply with Australia’s age-verification requirements could face significant financial consequences.
The report claims that civil penalties may reach as high as $49.5 million per violation, giving publishers a strong incentive to introduce effective verification systems.

Exactly how Rockstar would implement such checks remains unclear. Verification could potentially take place through Rockstar accounts, console platforms, digital storefronts, or third-party age-verification services.
Could the Rules Affect GTA 6’s Story Mode?
GTA 6 has initially been promoted as a single-player release, with Rockstar yet to provide full details about a new version of GTA Online.
Even so, age-verification rules may apply to more than online multiplayer features. Depending on how the Australian regulations are enforced, players could be asked to verify their age before purchasing, downloading, or launching the game.
The current GTA Online experience has already been affected by age-verification measures in some regions, suggesting Rockstar may need to expand these systems before GTA 6 arrives.
Other Countries Are Also Targeting GTA 6
Australia is not the only country where GTA 6 may encounter regulatory difficulties.
Tajikistan has reportedly prohibited the Grand Theft Auto franchise over concerns that the games promote violence, theft, and other criminal behaviour.
Some Russian politicians have also called for Rockstar to release a censored version of GTA 6. Their concerns reportedly include adult entertainment and other mature content believed to be featured in the game.
