Take-Two CEO Confirms GTA 6 Release Date

Grand Theft Auto VI is officially launching on November 19, 2026, according to Strauss Zelnick, who also admitted the game is roughly 18 months behind its original internal target.
Speaking during the Founders podcast hosted by David Senra, Zelnick addressed months of rumors and speculation surrounding the game’s release window with a direct confirmation.
“November 19th. I do know,” Zelnick said when asked about the launch date.
GTA 6 reportedly slipped by around 18 months
While delays surrounding Grand Theft Auto VI have been heavily rumored for months, this marks one of the clearest acknowledgements yet from Take-Two leadership.
Zelnick openly admitted that the project missed its original internal target by a significant margin.
“I think we’re about 18 months behind the original date. Not much more than that.”
Despite the delay, the CEO made it clear that Take-Two Interactive is not concerned about extending development time if it improves the final product.
Take-Two says quality matters more than deadlines
During the interview, Zelnick pointed to the original Borderlands as an example of the company prioritizing creative decisions over strict release schedules.
According to him, the development team requested a complete overhaul of the game’s art style just two months before launch, a decision that reportedly cost around $50 million and delayed the game by an entire year.
Zelnick approved the change anyway.
“Had we not done that, Borderlands wouldn’t have been a hit,” he explained. “And that was a non-obvious decision.”
He also argued that few publishers would be willing to make similar decisions under that level of financial pressure.
GTA 5’s success gives Rockstar room to delay
Zelnick also discussed why the release timeline for Grand Theft Auto VI attracts so much attention globally, describing the franchise as potentially “the most valuable entertainment IP ever created.”
He explained that the ongoing success of Grand Theft Auto V and its online ecosystem gives Rockstar Games more flexibility to absorb delays without rushing development.
“Online games are highly social experiences,” Zelnick said while discussing GTA Online’s longevity and continued player activity.
The comments arrive as industry insiders and former Rockstar developers continue warning that the game likely cannot afford another major delay beyond its current November 2026 launch target.
