GTA 6 Physical Copies Reportedly Won’t Include Discs At Launch Or After

GTA 6 is getting boxed copies, but they are not really “physical” in the way many fans were hoping.
Rockstar has already confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI will be sold digitally and through select retailers, with pre-orders opening on June 25 ahead of the game’s November 19, 2026 launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The catch is that the boxed version will not include an actual disc. Instead, players who buy the physical copy will get a download code inside the box. Those versions are expected to be available from November 12, giving players time to pre-load the game before release.
That alone was already enough to annoy fans who still wanted a proper disc. But now, a new report claims Rockstar may not be planning to print GTA 6 discs at all, even after launch.
GTA 6 Disc Version Reportedly Isn’t Planned
Some fans thought there was still a chance that a real disc version could arrive later, mostly because of a Rockstar Support email that started circulating online.
The email reportedly said players would be able to get a “physical copy” during the following months. Naturally, a lot of people took that to mean a disc-based version might come after launch.
However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, that wording was misunderstood. The report says a source familiar with Rockstar’s plans claims there are currently “no plans” to print GTA 6 discs at launch or in the months after release.
In other words, the support email was reportedly talking about the same boxed download-code version Rockstar has already announced, not a separate disc release coming later.
Rockstar Hasn’t Ruled Out Discs Forever
It is worth making one thing clear: Rockstar has not publicly said GTA 6 will never get a disc version.
So, technically, things could change in the future. But based on the latest report, fans probably should not expect a proper disc release to randomly show up shortly after launch.
For now, GTA 6’s “physical” edition looks more like a collector-style box with a digital code inside, rather than the traditional disc copy that players can install, lend, trade, resell, or keep on a shelf as a real playable copy.
Fans Are Not Happy About Code-In-A-Box Copies
The reaction has been pretty predictable. A lot of fans who still buy physical games are frustrated, especially because GTA 6 is not some small digital-only release. This is one of the biggest game launches ever, so many expected Rockstar to keep a real disc option available.
The biggest issue is ownership. With a disc, players usually have more freedom. They can resell the game, lend it to a friend, or keep it as part of a collection. With a download code, once the code is used, that copy is basically tied to an account.
That makes the boxed version feel less like a true physical release and more like a digital purchase with extra packaging.
GTA 6 Will Still Be Massive Anyway
Even with the backlash, it is hard to imagine this seriously hurting GTA 6’s sales.
Grand Theft Auto VI is still expected to be one of the biggest entertainment launches of all time, and most players are likely going to buy it no matter what format it comes in. Digital games are also already the normal option for a huge part of the console audience.
